Hi everyone. This morning I was invited to the launch of the iconic Sanrio X Dr Martens collection. I think most of us owned a pair of Dr Martens at least once in our life. I remember my parents bought me a pair in primary school and that was all that I would wear. I’m not sure why but I loved them so very much! When my family travelled to the UK for the first time, I got a pair of springy purple laces to replace the original ones at a market and could not stop looking at them. I should find a photo! Ever since then, I only owned one more pair of originals which was gifted to me by a friend of mine. I liked them but to be honest, I wasn’t a Dr Martens girl anymore so I gave them away which I somehow regret, really.

However, I have to say I really like this collection just cause the shoes look so much like candy! And when I tried them on, they were almost spongy and really comfortable. I had thought of buying a pair just so I could sit them on the shelf and just look at them! However, I’m now on a shopping ban. Arghs.

If you’re interested in getting a pair, do take note that they only brought in 8 pairs of each design and already people were queuing to get a pair today, so I’m not even sure if they have any left. But even if you’re not getting a pair from this collection, do drop by the Dr Martens retail space at #03-05 of Orchard Central to satisfy your shoe cravings.

When I was in Melbourne, I visited Luna Park which honestly, looked way more impressive from the outside. I wouldn’t recommend you to go there if you aren’t in the area, but if you are, snap away. Afterall, such establishments are soon becoming a thing of the past. Sad.

Speaking of tearing down beautiful places like these, will Singapore stop building high-rised buildings and conserve more of our heritage buildings. Pretty please! xx

Hi everyone. I don’t know why I suddenly decided to tell you this story, but perhaps it was after reading “Stories” by various authors and edited by Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio, I started to think about my own story. A sad little story. If you’re interested, please read ahead.

I had a friend whom I met in art school when I was 17 years old. Let’s just call her G. She was a petite person but like they say, don’t judge a person by their size. She was outgoing, assertive and because of her bad temper, maybe a little scary at times. She was the one who taught me all there was to know about fashion and its designers. G was always wearing a designer something. She’d tell me that a celebrity wore the dress she had on or how much she paid for her Chanel bag was and I would be in awe. I wouldn’t say I was jealous because at that point of time, I wasn’t interested in pretty or expensive things. Not really anyways. But I would always admire what she wore and a few times, after she had gotten tired of something, it would be given to me. A pair of LV flats which she had worn for only a few months yet was damaged to no extent. Her theory was that since she had paid good money for it, she would wear it through rain or shine or any natural disaster that came her way. This theory I still hold close to my heart and use it whenever my mother asks me to wash my old pair of converse sneakers. I know it probably sounds pathetic of how I took in her dirty seconds but I didn’t care cause it was LV for God’s sake.

G and I were close. She met my family and even my extended family and I met hers, which apparently was a first for any friend she’s ever had. We’d hang out all the time, talking about politics, philosophy and things most 17-18 year old girls wouldn’t talk about.

She quit school before the 2nd year started and left for New York to study at FIT. I was sad, but like most friends, I was also very happy for her. She left but came back soon enough which was when we took our first trip to Tokyo together, just the two of us. During that period of time, I started to realise things were not quite right. Perhaps you really only start getting to know a person either by going on a trip with them or living together. You see, G had a partner and till today, I’m not sure if her partner was a girl or a guy. But all I know was that she would always mention him (let’s just call him/her, him) briefly. She and I didn’t talked about boys and that was probably the reason why I didn’t know anything much about her love life. But then, sometimes when I think back on it, it was probably that she avoided the topic in general, that was more so the reason.

Back to Tokyo… Whenever I left the room, G would be on the webcam talking to her partner. The moment I stepped back in, she would turn off the volume of the speakers, an awkward smile plastered on her face. She didn’t let me see how he looked like and the only thing she mentioned was how he liked playing the guitar and would sing to her sometimes. Because I didn’t want to nosy and offend her, I just shrugged it off. Afterall, there wasn’t really any problem. She was happy and that made me happy.

G returned to New York after the Tokyo trip and we would talk online often. She would tell me how much she loved New York and that it was everything the movies had cracked it up to be and more. I was intrigued and at that point of time, was looking for a prospective university where I could study for my degree, so begged my parents to let me visit on the context that I looked into Parsons and FIT. My mum went along with me and we stayed at a rented apartment.

During this trip, I discovered even more oddities with G. She was given a great deal money to buy a special cream for my mother and when asked about it, said it was in her school locker. I commented that we could get it when we visited FIT. That day, as we approached the campus, G seemed lost and as if she had never been there before. She then responded saying that she had never been to that part of the building. I found that strange cause it was the main entrance of the school, but once again shrugged it off. When asked where her locker was, she said she would get the cream another day because it was too far from where we were. Too tired to argue with her the logicality of it all, we returned to the apartment.

Though there were strained moments in the trip, all was well. I went home with the knowledge that I would never call New York my second-home, not even for 3 years. While I had no intention of studying there, I went back again, but this time on my own to visit G. I was to attend a fashion trade show with her. For awhile, G had been selling pieces by LaRok, Citizens of Humanity and other American designer brands on ebay. She was doing very well and I wanted to try my hand in it. Fashion trade shows are where brands sell their wears to buyers local and international. Not everyone could enter and you had to have a legit boutique to do so. Now when I told you G was a little scary I wasn’t joking. She wasn’t one to think of consequences too much. She wrote her father’s office space in the East Coast of Singapore as her “boutique” address and as you would agree with me, that was a pretty dangerous thing to do. Smart, but dangerous. G said that no one would ever go all the way to Singapore to check if that place existed and even if she got caught, all they’d do was deport her for fraud. I couldn’t argue cause if it weren’t for her I wouldn’t even get to go in.

At the end of the trade show, I had gotten quite a lot of things amounting to almost 2000USD. G said the stock would be delivered to her house in a month or so and she would then sell them on ebay for me with a small commission fee. I was confident that everything would go well, but I was wrong.

I was back in Singapore and G returned soon after. G told me she was going to stay in Singapore for awhile but that her family didn’t know she was home and asked me to keep it a secret. She also told me that she returned because she had missed her partner and wanted to spend time with him. I agreed and then I asked her about my purchases and she said that they were in her apartment in New York and she would get about putting them up for sale when she returned. At this point, I was getting ready to leave for London. I passed G a few of my designer clothing after she told me she would help me sell them. Soon after, I left with her sending me off at the airport. That was the last time I was ever going to see of her.

If you’re getting confused and thinking things cannot get more confusing, they are about to.

When I was in London, I would email her and sometimes call her. But after a while, she didn’t reply my emails or call me. I got worried. One day, I received an email from her sister, asking me if I knew where G was for she had not contacted them for a few months. Things became clear after reading this particular email. Her sister informed me that G did not enroll at FIT which would explain why she didn’t know her way around the school and why she travelled back and forth so often (visa). G’s sister suspected that she had used her school fees as a start-up fund for her online business, which had at that moment, ceased to exist. G had disappeared and no one knew where she was. After checking with the Singapore Immigration, all we knew was that she was somewhere in New York. Of course I was angry at her. Tt was not so much about the money that she had absconded with but that she didn’t tell me any of this. I thought I was her best friend.

After a few months, my mother received a phone call from G’s mother who had difficulty mouthing out words as she was crying so hard at the same time. Apparently returned to Singapore but was stopped at the immigration. Because she had already turned 21, the police could not take her home without her consent and that was something she didn’t want to do. They did however convince her to talk to her family. She told her mother to forget about her and that she was disowning her family for good. It was heartbreaking even from a third’s person’s point of view.

Her mother wanted to repay her debt she owed us, but my mother refused to accept, telling me “she has lost a daughter. How could I be so coldhearted to take money she doesn’t even owe me?” And that was the last I heard of her.

I always try to understand why people do certain things and I guess I sort of understood why she did what she did.

G’s family was broken one. She had a father, a mother, an older sister and a younger brother. And you wonder how is that broken? Her father pampered the sister the most because she was the most intelligent and the mother loved the younger brother the most. This was what G always told and I know parents don’t usually play favourites, but the point is, she didn’t feel as loved as she thought she should have. Her father was rarely at home because he had two mistresses. The whole family knew that and her mother probably stayed with him still for the sake of the children and that she had no where else to go. This was what made her lose her sanity. G would tell me stories of how her mother went to his office and smashed his car windows or the time when her mother grabbed a kitchen knife and started swinging it around probably with the intention for just a split second, of killing her children and herself. I know no matter how many lies she told me, these events were real.

Everytime I think about her, it somehow pains me to think how much I really knew her. I loved her as a friend but I guess I was too scared to lose her to confront her about her issues. I don’t know where G is now. I don’t know if she’s dead or alive, but I’d like to think she’s doing well.

Dear G, Thanks you for teaching me about life, I’ll never forget you.
